How Reiki can relieve anxiety

Hey there,

As you’re here and reading this article, my guess is that you’re suffering with anxiety or stress. And that you’re curious to learn about how Reiki can relieve anxiety.

First things first, I just want to send you love. I know from personal experience that anxiety can be painful, exhausting, and at times, completely debilitating.

However anxiety is showing up in your life right now, and for whatever reason, I’m really glad you’re here.

I hope you find some comfort in the words that follow, and finish this blog curious to try Reiki for yourself. You deserve it.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is generally defined as a feeling of unease, worry or fear.

While many of us will experience anxiety to some extent in our lives, sometimes the feelings can be very strong and last a long time. If this sounds like you, it may mean you have an anxiety disorder (as one in 20 of us are said to).

If anxiety is affecting your wellbeing and quality of life then it makes absolute sense you want to find relief. Reiki can be a highly effective way of doing just that. That said, if you think you may have an anxiety disorder, I strongly recommend that you visit a medical professional to discuss the help available to you.

Anxiety may look and feel a little different for everyone experiencing it. It may affect your mind, making it difficult to think straight, concentrate, switch off and relax. It can also create physical feelings, including tension in your chest, tightness in the body, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and sweating.

Why do we get anxiety?

There are many reasons you may be suffering with anxiety. This could even be because of genetics as anxiety is more likely to develop if a close relative has an anxiety disorder. It can also arise if we have experienced traumatic events in our lives. This can include bullying, a stressful or confusing childhood home, domestic abuse, or an accident.

As human beings, if we feel we’re in danger, then our bodies react by releasing certain hormones like adrenalin and cortisol. While this is a natural response in the human body to a perceived threat, if its happening regularly, and intensely, it can take its toll on our emotional, mental and physical wellbeing. For example, if we have been through particularly stressful events in our lives, perhaps even repeatedly and frequently at a particular point in time (such as during childhood), then we may find we’re still now in a continuous state of “fight, flight or freeze”. We may be continuously worried something bad may happen, which can be tiring on all levels. This may then indicate that we require healing on a deep level, to re-train our nervous system and our mind (which is a separate topic altogether).

What is Reiki and how Reiki can relieve anxiety?

Reiki (ray-key), a form of complementary therapy originating from Japan in the 1920s, is a gentle energy healing technique. During a treatment, healing energy is guided into the body to promote the natural flow of energy through the body and its energy field.

Aside from facilitating the natural healing abilities of the physical body, which is in itself a beautiful gift, Reiki can promote a feeling of deep rest and relaxation. It can help to create balance and harmony on emotional, mental and energetic levels.

By inducing a state of physical relaxation, Reiki can be affective in activating the parasympathetic nervous system (which regulates bodily functions which are outside of our control i.e. the response to anxiety and stress). Reiki can therefore reduce heart rate, blood pressure and other symptoms of anxiety and stress.

What happens in a Reiki treatment?

Reiki treatments can take place in-person, or even remotely. The latter means that the Reiki practitioner and client do not need to be in the same room together. You can be in the comfort of your own home. This is called a “distance” Reiki treatment which can be particularly appealing if you’re suffering with anxiety and would rather not travel.

For in-person treatments with me, these take place at the Millers Way Project in Shepherd’s Bush, West London. This is a beautiful and serene alternative therapy centre with private treatment rooms. I recommend laying down on a massage table with a blanket. You will be fully clothed, but of course can take your shoes off.

If you’re at home, find somewhere you can relax, light a candle and play some gentle music. This is precious time for you.

For the next 45 minutes or so, I will channel Reiki energy into your body and its energetic field. I will do this by placing my hands a few centimetres above your skin at various points along your body.

Reiki treatments promote a deep sense of peace and relaxation. It is likely you will feel peaceful and relaxed during your treatment, and you may even feel a pleasant tingling sensation at times. You may relax so deeply that you drift off to sleep which is perfectly fine. Sometimes, you might feel quite emotional during a treatment, which can be a sign the energy is flowing and helping to unblock energy that has been stuck.

If you are struggling with anxiety that day, I will gently check in with you to see how you are feeling. Know that Reiki is always working to support you, and I’m there to support you too.

Once the treatment is over, we can have a chat to see how you’re feeling and how you found the treatment. If you like, I can give you an energy reading i.e. whether I experienced energetic blockages in parts of your body that may be contributing to your anxiety, and so on.

We will then talk through after-care and answer any questions you have.
