What is anxiety?

From a nervous system perspective, anxiety is closely connected to our survival response. When the body perceives danger — whether real, remembered, or anticipated — it releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. This activates the familiar fight, flight, or freeze response.

This response is designed to keep us safe. But when it’s triggered frequently or over long periods of time, the body can begin to live in a constant state of alert. We may feel as though something bad is about to happen, even when we are objectively safe.

Living in this state can be deeply tiring — emotionally, mentally, and physically. And for many people, healing anxiety isn’t about “getting rid of it”, but about gently supporting the body and nervous system to feel safe again.
