Contraindications for consuming cacao
Ceremonial-grade cacao is a gentle, heart-warming plant that may support emotional and spiritual connection. While it can be a beautiful part of a wellbeing or reflective practice, it may not be suitable for everyone. Please take a moment to review the following information to ensure cacao feels like a supportive choice for you. If you’re unsure or have specific health concerns, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider.
Cacao contains several naturally occurring compounds, including:
- Theobromine – a mild stimulant that promotes alertness and focus, but is gentler and longer-lasting than caffeine.
- Phenylethylamine (PEA) – sometimes called the “love molecule,” it may enhance mood and emotional connection.
- Anandamide – known as the “bliss molecule,” supporting a sense of calm and well-being.
Please consider the following:
Medication Interactions
Antidepressants (MAOIs): Cacao contains tyramine, which may interact with MAOIs and cause adverse effects.
SSRIs: As cacao naturally boosts serotonin, those taking SSRIs should consult their healthcare provider to avoid excessive serotonin activity.
Heart Conditions
Cacao can gently increase heart rate and blood pressure due to its stimulant properties. Please check with a healthcare provider if you have high blood pressure, a heart condition, or a history of heart disease.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
While small amounts of cacao are generally considered safe, ceremonial doses (25g or more) contain more theobromine and may not be suitable for everyone during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Please consult with your healthcare provider.
Sensitivity to Stimulants
Cacao contains theobromine and a small amount of caffeine. If you’re sensitive to stimulants, you may experience jitteriness or discomfort.
Caffeine Content in Cacao: A ceremonial dose of cacao (25–30g) typically contains around 5–15 mg of caffeine, compared to 80–100 mg in a standard cup of coffee, making cacao much milder—but still potentially stimulating for some.
Psychiatric Conditions
Cacao’s heart-opening and mood-enhancing properties can sometimes bring up strong emotions or sensations. If you are navigating intense anxiety, emotional sensitivity, or a mental health condition and are unsure how cacao might affect you, it may be helpful to speak with a healthcare provider or trusted practitioner beforehand to ensure the experience feels supportive and grounding.
Allergies & Dietary Restrictions
If you have a known allergy to cacao or chocolate, ceremonial cacao should be avoided.
