What is a Reiki healing session?

A Reiki (pronounced ray-key) healing session is a gentle energy healing technique and completely natural, and holistic, form of complementary therapy. It is in fact one component of an incredible system developed by a man called Mikao Usui in the early 1900s – a system (also including meditations and mantras, for example) designed to guide people to rediscover their true self, beyond their worries, fears, anger, and emotional pain.

During a healing session, Reiki (which translates as “universal life force energy” or “spiritual energy”) is guided into the body to support the natural flow of energy within; flow which can become imbalanced and stagnated as we go through life, impacting on our wellness and wellbeing. A Reiki healing session works to gently clear any energetic imbalances, bringing us back to a place of inner balance and harmony. By triggering the parasympathetic nervous system i.e. the body’s “rest and digest” mode, Reiki sessions often bring about a sense of deep relaxation, stimulating our natural healing abilities and initiating a detoxification and healing process. 

In essence, Reiki healing sessions can support our wellbeing on physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual levels. It may seem like these “parts” of us are separate to one another – our minds doing their own thing, while our bodies do another, and our feelings and emotions do another – but in fact these are all intrinsically and innately connected, united in a delicate dance. Together, they create the beautiful whole of who we are. Reiki healing sessions work with this interconnected whole and can positively impact every level of our being.

It is important to note that Reiki healing sessions are not necessarily a “quick fix”. While individual sessions can support inner balance and harmony, providing a deep sense of nourishment, comfort, and effective symptom relief, true healing is a journey that goes beyond a single Reiki healing session. By actively participating in our healing in a holistic manner, which may include Reiki healing sessions over time (and even self-Reiki when we feel ready), journaling for self-reflection, talking therapy, meditation and mindfulness practices, movement and yoga, etc, we can get to know ourselves deeply and with time, patience, and compassion, uncover and begin to let go of all that may be holding us back from living as our truest, most authentic, wholehearted self.

Reiki healing sessions can be a catalyst for this journey, supporting us to find a sense of calm, trust, and strength from within so we can step forward in the ways we feel called to.

What happens during a Reiki healing session?

In-person sessions

A 1hr-1hr15 session including consultation at the start and end of the session, energy balancing and a mindfulness meditation to help you relax.

An in-person treatment with me takes place at the blissful Millers Way Project in Shepherds Bush, West London; an alternative therapy centre with private treatment rooms, where you can treat yourself to the full experience.

An opportunity to relax and unwind, I recommend laying down on a massage table (with a blanket to cover you if you like), but there is also the option to sit, if you are more comfortable this way or have difficulties lying. Either way, we will make sure you are comfortable. 

For the next 45 minutes or so, I will place my hands on or over energy centres within your body, or where I feel intuitively guided, and channel Reiki to you. While this is happening, you may feel tingles in your body, warm or cool sensations in your arms and hands, or twitch as the energy works to harmonise. You may drift off to sleep, or you may feel nothing at all which is normal as well – Reiki will still be working.

Once the treatment is over, we can talk through after-care, and I can answer any questions you have.

Distance or “remote” sessions

A 1-hr session from the comfort of your own home, including energy balancing.

If you are unable to attend a Reiki treatment in person, then distance healing is a powerful and equally as effective alternative.

For a distance or remote Reiki treatment, all you need to do is find a quiet, comfortable place in your own home, where you can sit or lie and relax without being disturbed. This is precious time for you. Choose some peaceful music, light a candle, and relax. We can have a call before the session, and afterwards too.

Hi, I’m Katie. I qualified as a Reiki practitioner in 2019, almost a decade into my own journey of healing. I am dedicated to deepening my understanding and practice of the Japanese system of Reiki which focuses on personal development, healing, and spirituality. I practice the system of Reiki on a daily basis, including but not limited to hands-on healing on myself, breath work, and meditation, ensuring my own healing evolves in such a way that I can hold space for my clients and be a clear and open channel for life force energy to flow during a session. I recognise that personal healing must come first, before we can help others.

I have been meditating for over ten years and am a qualified meditation teacher and member of the UK Reiki Federation. Alongside my professional practice, I offer Reiki healing sessions to lovely residents at a nursing centre.
